In a recently published paper in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, HEART Lab director Dr. Sara Vasilenko and colleagues examined how profiles marked by different types of ACEs before age 12 were associated with later heavy episodic drinking (HED) during adolescence and adulthood. Results suggested that profiles marked by parental alcohol use, violent crime exposure, and child maltreatment had higher odds of HED compared to those with low ACEs during adolescence and in the thirties; however, these associations were not significant during emerging adulthood, suggesting this a period of particular risk for those who do not experience ACEs as well. Coauthors on this paper were Assistant Director Dr. Xiafei Wang, former doctoral student Dr. Linghua Jiang, and former undergraduate student Riley Turner.
